“Your domain name is a key part of your online address, and is what your visitors will use to find you easily. "
Let’s pretend that you are a florist and have a flower shop. Your phone rings, and you pick up the phone:
“Hello, Your Love Flower Shop!”.
The customer responds with:
“Hi, I’d like to order some roses for my wife. Oh also would you be able to tell me what your address is, so I can pick them up on my way home?”
“Sure, My address is 2 Sweetland St, Love City”
The answer is short and sweet. You never tell them:
“Yes, Insert the latitude 2222 and longitude 4444 on your map.” (Oh Dear!!!! What does that mean?)
Much like a real address, you will need to purchase “2 Sweetland St, Love City” – though we’ll get into multiple addresses at a later time.
In addition, there are no duplicate domain addresses on the internet – making every address unique. Meanwhile that’s great and all, but make sure you purchase the one you want before anyone else does. I’ve had clients before, who already made business card from another graphic designer with their domain on it. It’s very common thing that you have your logo and business card designed before your website. When they asked me to create a website with their domain name already on the business card - The domain name was already taken online by someone else. All the business cards had to be thrown away, and the logo didn’t match the domain it was based off.
Moral of the story – Secure your domain names as early as you can!
There are some free domain options when you purchase your webhosting, talk with your web people.
So, in short - You can say… My domain (or web address) is letgeocreate.com.
Does your domain have a value the same as your property?
Yes, so just don’t let your web designer or developer own it. You make sure you purchase your domain and it is under your account.
I don’t have a working website right now, can / should I still buy a domain?
Yes, please do so, before others buy it. Your web people will connect your domain and website easily after they build your website. It should not be a pricey investment, so why not?
My domain name that I want is taken, what should I do?
Consult with your web people. Perhaps there’s another way you can retain part of the original domain or incorporate something else to the end of the domain name.
